The 99 Names of Allah, known as Asmaul Husna (“the most beautiful names”), describe who Allah is: His mercy, His knowledge, His power and His care for His creation. Learning them is one of the most direct ways to know Him better, and each Name gives you a new way to call upon Him in dua.
Why the Names matter
The Quran itself points us to them:
“And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them.” (Al-A’raf 7:180)
A well-known hadith, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, says that Allah has ninety-nine names and that whoever learns and preserves them will enter Paradise. Scholars explain that this means more than memorising a list: knowing what each Name means, believing in it, and letting it shape how you pray and live.
The order of the Names
The list most people learn, and the one below, follows the order narrated by at-Tirmidhi. It begins with Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem, the two Names that also open every surah but one in the Bismillah, and ends with As-Sabur, The Most Patient.
How to learn them
Ninety-nine is a lot to learn at once, and you do not have to. A few habits make it easier:
- Learn three a day. In just over a month you will have met every Name. Read the Arabic, say the transliteration out loud and learn the meaning.
- Read the reflection, not only the word. “The Most Gracious” stays with you longer when you think about what His grace means in your own day.
- Use them in dua. Ask for mercy with Ar-Rahman, for provision with Ar-Razzaq, for forgiveness with Al-Ghaffar. The Names turn into words you actually use.
- Come back to your favourites. Some Names will speak to you more than others at different times. Keep a short list and return to it.
- Teach them. Explaining a Name to a child or a friend is one of the best ways to remember it yourself.
